| McAllen, Texas –October 26, 2004 - The City of McAllen is
looking for experience when it comes to building a multi-million
dollar Convention Center complex. The city is soliciting Bids
from General Contractors for the $50 Million Convention Center
Complex.
“The Convention Center project has been talked about in our
community for more than 20 years. It is finally coming to
fruition,” said Mayor Leo Montalvo, City of McAllen. He also
stated, “It is the first project of this size in Hidalgo County
and South Texas. The master plan for the new Convention Center
Complex has a future site for a fine arts auditorium, a special
events center, a Hotel, retail and restaurant facilities.

.City leaders want to start construction on the new
Convention Center in January of 2005. The project, located on
approximately 18.8 acres of land, will contain 174,000 sq. ft.
of enclosed space; parking for approximately 1,325 vehicles will
be provided.
“We are looking at a construction management firm’s previous
experience in building a convention center of this size with as
much complexity while having a good quality work record,” said
Mayor Montalvo.
The new Convention Center project is located on a parcel of
land at Expressway 83 and Ware Road in McAllen. The architects
of record are Gignac and Associates of Corpus Christi, Texas,
and the design architects, TVS of Atlanta, Georgia.
“The value of the construction contract is expected to exceed
$50 Million which includes a new Convention Center and
infrastructure at the site including, utilities, drainage,
streets, sidewalks, landscaping and fountains. The project is
anticipated to require approximately 20 months to complete,”
said David House, City of McAllen Architect.
A base bid proposal is due December 7, 2004 at 2:00 PM.
Alternates, qualifications, and supporting information are due
December 7, 2004 at 5:00 PM.
